Did you ever motivate yourself to study? I am sure there will be some instances in your life where you had to study even though you were not interested in the topic or the subject. Well, it happened to me many times. If you are specifically from an engineering background, I think you should be able to relate to this. Let us first try to understand the reasons why some people lack the motivation to study and then we will discuss how to overcome those.

Why people lack the motivation to study?

There can be many factors why people find themselves difficult when it requires them to study. To understand this, we first need to know the purpose behind the study. Is this for any competitive exam or is this for any upcoming examinations of your school or college? The motivation to study in each of these scenarios could differ. For example, if you can clear any competitive exam, you can get yourself admitted to a good college or get yourself a nice job. On the other hand, if you can clear your upcoming mid-term exam of your college, you would feel good to pass it. The impact of studying is likely bigger in the first situation. Hence, a person would likely put more effort into this case.

For the second scenario, clearing the mid-term exam can be very important to an individual who wants to make sure his grades are perfect. But for a person who is not as serious as the other person can have a laid-back attitude towards the mid-term exam thinking that the annual exam is still left to improve his performance in case the mid-term does not go well for him.

From the above examples, you can figure out that the impact or the end goal matters to get the motivation of studying harder. However, why one should study just thinking about the impact? Is that the right way to go ahead? It’s not. The end goal matters but we shouldn’t focus too much on that. Just prepare thoroughly not thinking too much about the results. You just don’t know that a small exam could open the doors for you in a manner that you never imagined. Hence, don’t take any exams lightly.

The second reason for the lack of motivation to study is concentration. People get easily distracted while studying- be it social media or watching some movies or songs, etc. Concentration is a skill one needs to acquire to get better at studies.

The third reason for not studying harder is because of the lack of interest in the subject. Well, that is so common. For example, I have less interest in the Biology subject. However, I still needed to study the subject else I could have flunked the exam. Sometimes, you just need to go out of your comfort zone to read a less appealing book. I know I should have put some more effort towards the Biology subject as no subject is of less value. Studying only helps to improve your knowledge. Even a less valuable book can provide you with a lot of wisdom.

Some people sleep while studying. There can be two reasons for this. Either they are super tired or they are getting bored of the subject. That is understandable if you are tired. We don’t need to discuss it. But why are you getting bored of the subject? Is it because you are not finding it interesting or is it because the subject is interesting but you are unable to get the guidance you require? This is something to think about. We will shed some more light on this later in this article.

The environment can be another reason why people don’t get the urge to study. I prefer an isolated room with a desk to put the book on and a chair to sit and study. I wouldn’t prefer any bed in that room. This can vary from person to person anyways. Having a bed in a study room is kind of a distraction as you may get the urge to lie down after studying for some time.

How people can overcome the problems to study more?

Now we are aware of the causes which led people not to study. Let us see how we can tackle each of those problems and get better at studying.

1. End goal

I know people have to study as they want to achieve something. However, thinking too much about the end goal may put pressure on them and they may not be able to study according to their potential. If you can say to your mind “I just need to study well. Don’t bother too much about the results”, you will see a positive impact on your study plan. You can still remain focused and prepare well. If you can follow this approach, you will certainly see a change in your results. In case, you could not achieve what you were supposed to achieve, you would not have any regrets because you know that you did put your best. One or the other day, you will be definitely successful.

2. Concentration

This is where many people struggle. When you start studying, there might be a variety of things that roam around inside your head and you lose focus imagining all of those dreams and thoughts. All you need is to concentrate on your reality which is basically studying at that point. You can practice meditation which would help improve your concentration on any activity.

3. Lack of interest

When you don’t find a subject interesting just by reading a book, you can try other forms of studying such as watching videos on that subject. There are so many video tutorials available nowadays over the internet. This may help you to restore your interest in the subject. You can then come back and read the book again to understand the topic.

4. Sleeping while studying

When you are bored of a subject or topic, it may happen that you fall asleep sometimes while reading. This is also similar to the lack of interest as we discussed above. In this case, also, the solution remains the same. You can grab a cup of tea or coffee and divert yourself to video tutorials on that topic. This would hopefully help to keep you active throughout your study time.

5. Study environment

I believe the study environment matters a lot when it comes to effective reading. Try to get yourself a place where there is less distraction and you can focus fully on the subject you are going to read. Having a study table and a chair would be helpful as well. A chair would help you to keep your sitting posture correct and you will not feel too tired even if you need to study for longer hours.

Conclusion

I hope after reading this article, you would be able to motivate yourself to study harder and achieve great success. I wish you all the best in your journey!
